The academic operation of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture starts from the beginning of the academic year 2019-20 (Law 4610/2019, Government Gazette 70 / 7.5.2019 τ.Α ‘).
The Department is part of the School of Agricultural Sciences of the University of PatrasThe agricultural sciences are at the center of great challenges of the modern world linked to the urgent need for producing and exploiting more and better quality of food with sustainable manner for the natural resources and the environment.
In this context, the Department aims at:
- providing complete scientific knowledge, know-how and skills to students in the science of animal production, fisheries management and aquaculture with emphasis on innovative technologies and environmental sustainability
- conducting basic and applied research to produce new knowledge in the science of production of farmed terrestrial and aquatic animals and organisms
Based on the above mission, the following strategic objectives of the Department of Animal Production, Fisheries and Aquaculture are formulated that are directly related to the respective objectives at the University of Patras and include:
- provision of high-level academic education, with an emphasis on student-centered learning,
- production of basic and applied research of high national and international level,
- development of innovative technologies and research products and their forwarding in primary production,
- contribution to the economic and social development of the Greek countryside by solving problems that fall within the scientific fields of the Department aiming at sustainable fishing, aquaculture and quality production of animal products,
- focused on the interaction between ecosystems and human society
- improving the link with the labor market and scientific bodies,
- improvement of the infrastructure and the administrative procedures for the more efficient operation of the Department.
The strategic advantage of the location of the Department next to a natural laboratory (Mesolongi‐Etoliko lagoons, hatchery and fish farm units, freshwater systems) with an immense environmental and heritage value can boost the research and development in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
