The Department of Fisheries-Aquaculture at the University of Patras is internationally recognised for the quality of its research and its academic programme. It is dedicated to provide the highest quality teaching in classroom and in the field, as well as research opportunities in Marine Sciences for students at all levels.
The strategic advantage of the Department is the proximity next to a natural laboratory (Mesolongi-Etoliko lagoons, hatchery and fish farm units, fresh-water systems) with an immense environmental and heritage value that can boost the technological training in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The Department, one of the two Fisheries Departments in Greece, was founded in 1981 and undergraduate students were first admitted in 1985. Since then, 1180 students have obtained their degree, most of them have staffed research institutes, private fishing enterprises, aquaculture units, fish hatcheries, shellfish growing enterprises, fish processing units and co-operative organizations.
The Department embraces an impressive variety of topics in Marine and Fisheries Sciences and is strongly linked to Greece’s high dependent on fisheries. Presently, there are 16 full-time faculty members ranging from lecturer to professor. Support personnel consist of research associate and members of administrative and technical staff.
The laboratories for research and teaching, the library, the computing center and lecture rooms and a lecture hall of the Department are housed in the Mesolongi University campus closed to the lagoon.
