The project  “Fishers, sea turtles, sharks: Alliance for survival,  is continuing into this year enriched and expanded to the observation of rays. The “Alliance” is growing with the scientific contribution of the Department of Animal Production, Fisheries & Aquaculture of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Patras.

The project has three main pillars:

  1. to amplify knowledge and empower all fisheries stakeholders (Port authorities, auction markets, Fisheries authorities, professional and artisanal fishers etc) regarding the legislation regulating the protection of sea turtles, sharks and rays in Greek waters.
  2. to train all fisheries stakeholders (Port authorities, auction markets, Fisheries authorities, professional and artisanal fishers etc) on identifying vulnerable species (sea turtles, sharks, rays) and safe release techniques when incidentally caught.
  3. To raise awareness on general audience with a focus on consumers with respect to unsustainable fishing practices and their negative impact on fish stocks and guide them on how they can contribute to the imposition of the legal framework.

The project will focus on 10 Greek ports: Kalloni (Lesvos), Alexandroupoli, Kavala, Michaniona (Thessaloniki), Alonnisos, Piraeus, Kiato, Kylini, Preveza and Corfu.
