The aim of the education curriculum of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the University of Patras is to provide comprehensive and innovative scientific knowledge to students that will be directly related to the qualitative and quantitative improvement of the terrestrial livestock and aquatic production. This will be implemented through the use of innovative scientific methods and technologies, of the accumulated experience in the field, the international practices and the immediate and imperative holistic view in the planning and development of the production of both terrestrial animals and aquatic organisms.The students of the Department will beneficially equipped with innovative research skills and expertise in order to have the privilege to share more about their qualifications within the globalized scientific community.The Education Curriculum also targets to design and implement innovative agricultural policy programs aimed at the production, processing and marketing of quality agricultural products of animal origin and within the framework of viable and sustainable development and the environmental protection.The graduates of the Department, based on the knowledge they acquire during their studies, acquire skills and specialties to:-        know-how and technological innovations, on the production, processing and marketing of fishery, aquaculture and animal products as well as the sustainable management of the aquatic ecosystem. The graduate possesses an inter-scientific range of knowledge as he combines the field of application of biological, chemical, physical and economic sciences related to fisheries, aquaculture and processing-elaboration of fish catches and farmed animals, as well as the development and application of technologies and management methods, and assessment and evaluation of the environment.

  • modern scientific and technological methods for the operation, organization, management and design of all types of units for aquaculture, processing, and quality and health control of all types of fish catches and terrestrial animals.
  • modern scientific and technological methods for the improvement of terrestrial and aquatic organisms as well as the isolation and production of their products with application in biotechnology.
  • marketing of all kinds of animals, fish catches, fishery products and by-products, animal feed and medicines and equipment for animal feed, aquaculture, processing and standardization of animal products, fish catches, laboratories, fishing gear and fishing vessels equipment.
  • operation, organization and management of companies, cooperatives, special laboratories and offices providing services and special activities in animal husbandry, aquaculture and fisheries management.
  • technical design of facilities for livestock, aquaculture, processing, packaging and distribution of products and by-products and fish markets in collaboration with specialist technical scientists.
  • preparation of studies for assessment, evaluation and management of aquatic ecosystems and aquatic environment.
  • staffing of private and public organizations, companies and cooperatives related to the specialty and the possibility of professional development in the whole range of the technical and administrative hierarchy in accordance with the legislation.
  • employment at all levels of education and professional training related to the specialty, in accordance with the legislation.
  • practice of the profession as a Zoo-technician or Ichthyologist.

Furthermore, the goal of the Department is to conduct basic and applied research to produce new knowledge in the sciences of animal and aquatic production so as to contribute in every way to the economic and social development of the Greek countryside by solving problems that fall within the scientific fields that it treats.
