Course Content

Historical preamble. The ramifications of Microbiology. The world of the micro-organisms; their role and importance. Classification and discrimination of the living organisms. Archaea, Eucarya, Procarya. Morphology and structure of bacteria; motility. Bacterial physiology, nutrition/metabolism and growth; reproduction and propagation. Essential Bacterial systematics. Main taxa of interest. Eucaryotic microbes; fungi, algae, protozoa. Microbial culture, study and preservation methods. General virology. Methods for studying viruses. Natural activities and specializing usages of microbes; interactions with other (micro-) organisms. Antimicrobial practices.

Course Content

Embryogenesis and ontogenesis. Epidermal – Musculoskeletal system, organ structure (cell populations) and tissues. Operation of the body, movement – navigation. Respiratory system, organ structure (cell populations) and tissues. Function of the body, breathing. Hematopoietic – Circulatory system 1, organ structure (cell populations) and tissues. Function of the body, hematopoiesis. Hematopoietic – Circulatory System 2. Function of the body, immunity. Digestive system 1, organ structure (cell populations) and tissues. Function of the body, intestinal functions, hepatic and pancreatic functions. Digestive system2, Function of the body, nutrition (digestion, metabolism). Excretory system, organ structure (cell populations) and tissues. Function of the body, excretion (urine – faeces), osmosis, ionic regulation, acid – base balance. Genital – Endocrine system, organ structure (cell populations) and tissues. Body function, reproduction, hormonal functions. General concepts. Central limit theorem. Sampling distribution of the mean. The concept of standard error. Confidence Intervals. Power analysis. Introduction to hypothesis testing. Hypothesis test for a population mean. One sample t test. Comparison of two means. Independent samples t test. Paired samples t test. X2 test for 2×2 contingency tables.  X2 test for r x c contingency tables. McNemar’s test. Odds ratios. Hypothesis testing for odds ratios. One way analysis of variance. Basic concepts of Ecology. Organisms and metabolism. Abiotic agents. Elements of Population Ecology. Relationships between species (predation – parasitism, competition, coexistence, neutrality). Changes over time (Evolution, Ecological Succession, Species diversity and complexity). Description of characteristic ecosystems (Terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, Biosystems (References), reference to major known interactions). Biogeochemical Cycles (Cycle of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus). Pollution and eutrophication, Cycle of sulfur and water. Anthropogenic effects and consequences on the structure and function of ecosystems. Climate change. An approach to applying ecological principles in the management of human activities to avoid impacts on ecosystems.
